William “Extra Billy” Smith died at Monte Rosa sitting in his favorite chair on May 18, 1887 at the age of 90 and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. The chair remains at Monte Rosa. The ground of the Virginia State Capital has a statue honoring Mr. Smith.
